My full name is Ruby Rose Ann Taylor and I was born and raised in Tasmania by my two parents; Murray and Teresa. I have four sisters named Emma, Simone, Connie and Lola. I grew up in the North-West of the State on a property of 64 acres of Rain Forest. As a child we made cubbies (little houses made from ferns and wood) and swam in the nearby river.
When I was in Grade Six I spent the summer holidays swinging from the vines of tall trees on our property. One particular day I discovered the secret of how to swing higher and longer and it was whilst I was high in the trees that the vine snapped and I fell with a loud thump to the ground.
I gasped for air but it had all been knocked out and as I tried to stand, a warm trickle of blood spilled down my back leg. My sisters and family friends were instantly in a panic and raced up the hill screaming for help.
My dad and his friend Shane made a stretcher from a large tent bag and brought me out of the bush. My family saw a large cut high on the back of my leg which gaped open and was gruesomely yellow where all the fat was exposed. An ambulance shortly came and I was taken to the Burnie Hospital.
I look back on this experience with no regrets because as I swung out on that vine I felt like I was flying and if that is the closest I get to that feeling than I would do it all again. I account my wild, blue and free ways to growing up in an area where the bush is a playground and there are no limits to the fun you can create.
All the very best to you,
Ruby Taylor
